Beginner Las Vegas Hikes
for the Nature Novice

Just a few miles from the Silverton are some of the most fantastic beginner Las Vegas hikes  — from the desert landscapes of Red Rock Canyon to the refreshing pines of Mt. Charleston.  You don’t have to be an expert hiker to enjoy these beginner Las Vegas hikes.  Here are three of our favorites:

Beginner Las Vegas Hikes at Red Rock Canyon

Red Rock Canyon

The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is just a short 25 minute drive from Silverton Casino, a Las Vegas hotel good for hiking.  Within minutes, you’ve left behind all traces of Sin City and are surrounded by gorgeous mountain landscapes, and perfect beginner Las Vegas hikes.

The Scenic Drive, a 13 mile paved road, provides access to explore the many special canyons and sandstone hills in the heart of the canyon. There are 12 different trailheads and free parking areas to begin your next outdoor adventure. A visitor center provides a great introduction to the unique natural and cultural history of this area along with safety and orientation information. This is also one of the best selfie spots in Las Vegas.

Before you head out, make a stop at Bass Pro Shops to pick up your hiking supplies, including a water bottle to stay hydrated.  To plan ahead, here’s a good site with more information.

Note:   Currently, Red Rock Canyon has a timed entry reservation system (through May 31, 2022).  All vehicles entering the Scenic Drive need a free reservation, which is available online.

Beginner Las Vegas Hikes at Mt. Charleston

Mt. Charleston

If you are worried about the high summer temperatures in Las Vegas, Mt. Charleston is your place to cool off while taking a beginner Las Vegas hike.  More than 60 miles of maintained trails wind through the area, most starting at over 6,000ft in elevation and some culminating at the 11,916ft Charleston Peak.  The good news — it’s less than an hour from Silverton Casino, your home base for a Las Vegas hike, and often as much as 30 degrees cooler than the Las Vegas valley below.

Be sure to  avoid dehydration due to the high elevation by packing plenty of water.  (Again, we recommend Bass Pro for supplies)

Note: Hikers should always watch the weather and check for flood, lightning, and avalanche warnings.

Las Vegas Nature Walk at Springs Preserve

Springs Preserve

Las Vegas Springs Preserve consists of 180 acres dedicated to nature walks and displays and is owned and operated by the Las Vegas Valley Water District. The Preserve is located approximately 20 minutes from Silverton Casino and Bass Pro Shops. The Preserve is built around the original water source for Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Springs.

While more “theme park” than “nature trail,” this is a perfect beginner Las Vegas hike.  The Springs Preserve includes colorful desert botanical gardens, museum galleries, outdoor concert and event venues, an indoor theater, historic photo gallery and a series of walking trails that meander through a wetland habitat.
