Beginner Las Vegas Hikes
for the Nature Novice

Just a few miles from the Silverton are some of the most fantastic beginner Las Vegas hikes  — from the desert landscapes of Red Rock Canyon to the refreshing pines of Mt. Charleston.  You don’t have to be an expert hiker to enjoy these beginner Las Vegas hikes.  Here are three of our favorites:

Beginner Las Vegas Hikes at Red Rock Canyon

Red Rock Canyon

The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is just a short 25 minute drive from Silverton Casino, a Las Vegas hotel good for hiking.  Within minutes, you’ve left behind all traces of Sin City and are surrounded by gorgeous mountain landscapes, and perfect beginner Las Vegas hikes.

The Scenic Drive, a 13 mile paved road, provides access to explore the many special canyons and sandstone hills in the heart of the canyon. There are 12 different trailheads and free parking areas to begin your next outdoor adventure. A visitor center provides a great introduction to the unique natural and cultural history of this area along with safety and orientation information. This is also one of the best selfie spots in Las Vegas.

Before you head out, make a stop at Bass Pro Shops to pick up your hiking supplies, including a water bottle to stay hydrated.  To plan ahead, here’s a good site with more information.

Note:   Currently, Red Rock Canyon has a timed entry reservation system (through May 31, 2022).  All vehicles entering the Scenic Drive need a free reservation, which is available online.

Beginner Las Vegas Hikes at Mt. Charleston

Mt. Charleston

If you are worried about the high summer temperatures in Las Vegas, Mt. Charleston is your place to cool off while taking a beginner Las Vegas hike.  More than 60 miles of maintained trails wind through the area, most starting at over 6,000ft in elevation and some culminating at the 11,916ft Charleston Peak.  The good news — it’s less than an hour from Silverton Casino, your home base for a Las Vegas hike, and often as much as 30 degrees cooler than the Las Vegas valley below.

Be sure to  avoid dehydration due to the high elevation by packing plenty of water.  (Again, we recommend Bass Pro for supplies)

Note: Hikers should always watch the weather and check for flood, lightning, and avalanche warnings.

Las Vegas Nature Walk at Springs Preserve

Springs Preserve

Las Vegas Springs Preserve consists of 180 acres dedicated to nature walks and displays and is owned and operated by the Las Vegas Valley Water District. The Preserve is located approximately 20 minutes from Silverton Casino and Bass Pro Shops. The Preserve is built around the original water source for Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Springs.

While more “theme park” than “nature trail,” this is a perfect beginner Las Vegas hike.  The Springs Preserve includes colorful desert botanical gardens, museum galleries, outdoor concert and event venues, an indoor theater, historic photo gallery and a series of walking trails that meander through a wetland habitat.

Las Vegas Selfie Spots

To help with your Las Vegas trip plans, here are three of our favorite Las Vegas selfie spots — and a great offer to stay at Silverton.

Las Vegas Selfie Spot #1:  Welcome to Las Vegas Sign

Las Vegas sign selfie

It’s definitely the most famous landmark in Las Vegas — the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign, which has been in place on the Las Vegas Strip since 1959.  The sign is located just a few miles from Silverton Casino —  in the median at 5100 Las Vegas Boulevard South, north of the historic stone pillars of the old McCarran Field on the east side, and across from the Bali Hai Golf Club.

There are plenty of tips for getting a selfie at the sign.  It gets busy, so be prepared to wait in line.  The most helpful tip is getting there early.  Consider a morning visit, when it is cooler and the crowds of selfie-seekers are at a minimum.

Gateway Arches

BONUS TIP:  Where Traveler Magazine suggests two other Las Vegas landmark signs, both located at the other end of the Las Vegas Strip.  The newest — the Las Vegas Gateway Arches — is located on the north end of the Strip between St. Louis Ave. and Bob Stupak Ave. at the base of The STRAT tower.   The illuminated arches form a gateway to downtown Las Vegas. There are over 13,000 lights on the arches, and the sign changes color (which makes for a great time-lapse video clip).  Just a few blocks away, you will find another never-crowded selfie spot with 26-foot showgirls, dice and poker chips stacked high enough to sit on and the city of Las Vegas logo.

Las Vegas Selfie Spot #2:  Silverton Mermaids

Silverton Mermaids Las Vegas

It may be a desert out there — but it’s not a visit to Las Vegas without taking a trip to see the famed Silverton Mermaids.  Legend has it that spotting a mermaid will bring you luck for the rest of the day.  Located just a few miles from the Las Vegas Strip, Silverton Casino is home to a 117,000 gallon aquarium, where mermaids make appearances Thursday through Sunday (schedule online).

BONUS TIP:  If you miss the mermaids, stop by at 1:30 and 4:30pm for an equally interesting stingray feeding.  Wait for one of the bigger rays to press its face on the glass for the perfect selfie backdrop!

Las Vegas Selfie Spot #3:  The Arts District

Las Vegas Arts District

About a mile from Downtown Las Vegas, the Historic Arts District is vivid, eclectic, and ever-growing thanks to the city’s remarkably creative locals. Beautifully decorated with vibrant murals around every corner, this cool spot is a must-see for tourists who enjoy the quirky and artistic side of life.  If you love street art, visit on every trip—many murals are created for the Life is Beautiful festival and change yearly, according to Where Traveler.

Life is Beautiful street art

BONUS TIP:  If you visit in September, the Life is Beautiful music festival puts street art front and center.  You’ll literally find dozens of dynamic murals and art installations throughout Downtown Las Vegas.   It’s selfie nirvana.
